Retailer TJX Cos. is getting a lot of love on social media for its decision to continue paying its employees in Puerto Rico — even as some of its stores remain closed nearly seven weeks after Hurricane Maria devastated the island.
The parent company of retailers T.J. Maxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods had to shutter some of the 29 stores in Puerto Rico in September after the Category 4 hurricane knocked out power and caused extensive damage and loss of life.
“Based on the devastating circumstances in Puerto Rico, we can confirm that we have continued to pay our TJ Maxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods Associates on the island,” TJX spokeswoman Erika Tower said. “At this time, most of our associates are back to work in one of our open stores.”
The company has 29 stores in Puerto Rico but declined to say how many stores remain closed.
Attention to this issue first surfaced with a Facebook post from Iván Meléndez thanking Marshall’s for continuing to pay his son while the store was closed.
In a translation of the Spanish-written post, he said: “Thanks to the stores for such an honorable gesture. From now on I’m going to sponsor this network even more.”
Since then, many others have jumped on the social bandwagon heaping praise on the retailer.
